At the beginning of 2016, the Institute of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences  and the Association of Japanese Studies decided to issue a joint electronic scientific journal "Japanese Studies".

The journal is funded by the Association of Japanese Studies, which attracts funds from sponsors (funds, donations) for publishing purposes.

All numbers are included in the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI).

All issues are included in the Scientific Electronic Library "CyberLeninka", where articles receive DOI.

In September 2018, the journal  was included in the Web of Science – ( database Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) / "Citation Index of new sources"). Currently, the journal is the only Russian Japanese studies publication included in the Web of Science.

Since March 3 , 2019 , the magazine has been published on a separate bilingual website of the magazine with a domain name http://japanjournal.ru.

The journal has actually become an all-Russian edition covering all domestic Japanese studies and providing an academic platform for Japanese Studies scholar from Russia and other  countries.
